Review by Anna StewartBook Review - You Read to Me & I'll Read to YouYou Read to Me & I'll Read to You: 20th-Century Stories to Share Twenty-six stories all in one big book, You Read to Me & I'll Read to You brings hours of reading without having to get up. Janet Schulman, a veteran of children's book publishing, chose the stories. With the heft of a classic, the illustrated volume has something for everyone. One of the benefits of a volume of stories, is that readers are exposed to tales they may not have chosen in an individual book. Kathleen Krulls' moving story, "Wilma Unlimited" tells how Wilma Rudolph overcame polio to become the world's fastest runner. While historical non-fiction is essential to have, it is not always what a young reader would pick off the bookshelf. It's a gift to have it included in this anthology. "The Tenth Good Thing About Barney" by well-known author Judith Viorst is a sweet tale of saying goodbye to a beloved pet. And several are just the kind of humor that both kids are parents enjoy such as Judi Barrett's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," or Charlotte Pomerantz' tongue-twisting poem,"The Piggy in the Puddle". All the stories are excellent. Some will only be read once and others many, many times. Schulman included enough variety and age-range, to make this a great choice for a family with more than one young reader. You Read to Me & I'll Read to You will sell well, like it's predecessor the best-selling 20th Century Children's Book Treasury. It should, it's a well-selected group of tales. That said, it could have omitted many of the well-known stories such as the wonderful classic, "Horton Hatches the Egg"by Dr. Seuss or the hilarious "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs," by Jon Scieszka. Not because they aren't good, on the contrary, they are fantastic stories. But because they are already well read. There are so many other great stories that haven't reached that level and this would be a perfect place to put them. "The Knight Who was Afraid of the Dark" by Barbara Shook Hazen or the darling "Peach and Blue" by Sarah S. Kilborne are two stellar books deserving of a bigger readership. Beautifully constructed and lovingly chosen, You Read to Me & I'll Read to You, deserves a place on the shelf. And perhaps it may inspire readers - young and old, to write their own top 25 list of favorite stories. Copyright © 2003 Anna Stewart. All rights reserved worldwide.
