Dear Caron,
I am an RN and just started a new job in a mental health facility. The focus is on children and adolescence. We do a daily "group" with them. We may pick the topic the only criteria being "education" of some sort. I wanted to offer some valuable coping skills kids could use. So, I went to the computer and spent over an hour clicking on lists of Internet items looking for help. I was getting very tired and needed to go to bed. When bingo" I found your article on kids, trauma, and coping skills! I just wanted to say a great big thank-you for your helpful article!
Sincerely ,
Charlotte Rogers

Musical Magic: Ways to soothe and calm your child

Musical Magic book cover No, there is no way of escaping it – today's fast-paced world that bombards the senses with sounds and mechanical vibrations. Your body can easily shift into an unnatural rhythm. You might say you're “out of synch” or “out of harmony” while science would call that feeling “stressed.”

However, you don't need to reach into the medicine cabinet to change a stressed-out mood. Instead, you can restore harmony in your body by turning to music.

Why turn to music? Because using certain types of musical rhythms brings about a state of relaxed alertness and physical calm though an alpha brainwave pattern, similar to the pattern created when you meditate. Yet music can do in minutes what people strive to accomplish in weeks of meditative practice!

Music has been a part of human experience throughout history. Through music, we explore the depths of our hearts and come together in movement and celebration. Music provides a background for excitement and passion, love and comfort, and for relaxation and joy. Music is our heart's song.

As parents, one of the most powerful tools available to us is to use music to help manage children's moods. It is a resource which most of us have easy access to, and which we can utilize without having special training . When anxiety, tension, and trauma have been present in the spirit of our kids, we rely on intuition and caring to help them cope with and beat the stress. Music is an invaluable asset to us in this process.

Learn how to help your family find the songs in their hearts.
