Dear Caron,
I am an RN and just started a new job in a mental health facility. The focus is on children and adolescence. We do a daily "group" with them. We may pick the topic the only criteria being "education" of some sort. I wanted to offer some valuable coping skills kids could use. So, I went to the computer and spent over an hour clicking on lists of Internet items looking for help. I was getting very tired and needed to go to bed. When bingo" I found your article on kids, trauma, and coping skills! I just wanted to say a great big thank-you for your helpful article!
Sincerely ,
Charlotte Rogers

Parenting the Whole Child

By Caron B. Goode

How do we fulfill the needs of the whole child? What is the foundation for whole child parenting? And what are the building blocks for wholeness?

We’ve become fragmented in our western worldview. As a result, we have developed segmented disciplines in our society: Medicine treats the body’s symptoms; psychology deals with the mind; education trains the intellect; religion cares for the soul. Yet, our mind, body, and spirit together make up one network of connected systems of energy, biochemistry, and behavioral responses. Read on...

“I already told you, Mom.”

“Who else will be there?”

“I dunno.”

“When will you be home?”

“I dunno.”

“Don’t get smart with me.”

“I’m not, but you’re making me late!”    Read on...

Fathers, Egos, and Youth Sports

By Mark Brandenburg

“What kind of throw was that?” said the father to his son.

The boy picked up another baseball and threw it, this time with better results. “There, that’s better,” the father conceded.

Spring youth baseball had started, and all over the country, fathers with great enthusiasm and intensity were leading seven and eight-year-olds into the world of competition. And all around the field were nervous parents, hoping their child would stand up to the scrutiny of other parents and peers.  Read on...

Comforting Your Fearful Preschooler

By Caron B. Goode

Have you ever woken from a dream that was so vivid you had to convince yourself it wasn’t real? During those first unsure moments you are unable to separate dream from reality. Eventually, past experience allows you to ground yourself in the here and now. Unfortunately for preschool children, they lack this experience and often suffer at the hands of irrational fears and nightmares.  Read on...

Boosting Your Immune System

By Rick and Jan Hanson

Since having kids, I’ve been getting colds much more often, plus I developed a chronic rash that my doctor says is an autoimmune condition. Why is this happening to me? And what can I do?  Read On...
