Dear Caron,
I am an RN and just started a new job in a mental health facility. The focus is on children and adolescence. We do a daily "group" with them. We may pick the topic the only criteria being "education" of some sort. I wanted to offer some valuable coping skills kids could use. So, I went to the computer and spent over an hour clicking on lists of Internet items looking for help. I was getting very tired and needed to go to bed. When bingo" I found your article on kids, trauma, and coping skills! I just wanted to say a great big thank-you for your helpful article!
Sincerely ,
Charlotte Rogers

Editor's note: This is the first of a series of articles on empowered children that will appear here periodically.

Book Review - The Story of Chopsticks

Although the actual origin of chopsticks cannot be traced, this book offers a playfully clever version of how it might have happened. A well-told story with sensitive illustrations, this book will appeal both to children and those who read to them.

Mother Arts: Witnessing Our Children
By Anna Stewart

I sit cross-legged on the floor of the playroom. Eighteen-month old Sabrina moves closer and looks at me. She picks up a green crayon. I do the same. She says "uh", and holds the crayon over her head. I do the same. I wait until she brings her hand down before I bring down mine. She is the leader, this is her dance and I am here to follow every step. Read on...

Inspired Grandparenting: Thoughts After Mother's Day
By Elaine K. Williams

I had an especially wonderful Mother's Day this year. After all, it is children who make mother's day possible! My mom, who is 83 years old and quite fragile, stayed with me for the weekend. Even though she has lost most of her sight, her memory is fading rather quickly, and she seems a shadow of her former self, I really was able to connect with the heart of this woman I used to call "Sarge".
