By Caron GoodeA Message of Heart and Hope, Part OneSaturday, January 28th, I had the privilege to watch the premier screening of a new film called The Indigo Revolution which was sponsored by CosmiKids and Children of the New Earth Magazine. Thrills and chills ran through me as I watched the story unfold yet another time of children born from 1980’s forward and who exhibit in their early years a connection to the wisdom of the universe, or God. Parents, educators, doctors, philosophers and the children themselves shared their stories of knowing of their previous lives, direct inspiration to paint haunting images, or telepathic communication. I have always hesitated to champion the cause of the “Indigos” because I have championed the cause of all children. My parenting book, Nurture Your Child’s Gift: Inspired Parenting came about from the kids who were labeled, hyperactive, social maladaptive, incorrigible, emotionally disturbed or learning disabled. I taught them as a special education teacher, and my job was to help these children enter the mainstream. Most were already lost to and forgotten by the system. My challenge was to find their interest, gift, talent, or motivation to keep going until they could finish the next school year. I discovered their need to take a deep breath to keep from blowing up, close their eyes and see their inner super hero who could solve their problem, and hold a rock in their palm during sharing time to stay grounded. Each child did have dreams and gifts they rarely shared with another educator, and the reason was fairly simple. No one ever asked them. When I asked, I heard stories of those who saw ghosts, some who dreamed their futures, some who could build a computer or play music, but couldn’t spell or do math. They were kids who didn’t fit the system then, and they still don’t. They’ve always been here, perhaps today their numbers are growing. When a parent found out it was possible to label a child by dis-ability, not ability, I was offered bribes occasionally “help them out.” I never took any bribes, but I did end up counseling parents how to maneuver through the system of laborious paperwork. That type of counseling still goes on today through those who advocate for the parent and their children who get lost in the system. All children have gifts and talents, and it is our job to help them mature into it. If you want to know how, then buy the book. So are Indigo Kids really new? I saw leprechauns when I was kid, knew better not to tell anyone and could distinguish reality from fantasy. I would have forgotten the leprechauns as I grew older if my grandmother hadn’t shared a story from her childhood one day. Yep, she saw leprechauns once. I didn’t forget such experiences from my childhood, but I didn’t talk about it. Indigo children don’t forget either, and they are not afraid to talk about it. Perhaps with the frightening, rising number of children being labeled autistic, ADD, ADHD, and more, we could say we have a major educational problem. No, it’s not the kids. It is the educational system, and parents are sick and tired of it and demanding change. Bravo! Kent Romney is the co-producer and co-director of the film, The Indigo Evolution. He indicated in the panel discussion following the film debut, that he knew nothing of the term, and took on the project which unfolded itself. “Serendipity scripted the film,” he said. And the message of this film was not about the Indigo Children per se, but about a global movement documented by Sandra Sedgbeer through Children of the New Earth Magazine described as an evolution of consciousness. Sandra’s point in the panel discussion was that the letters the magazine received poured in from around the globe, demonstrating that this topic hit a chord within every race. We are recognizing our connection to something greater than ourselves. We are remembering our spiritual connectedness to God and all living things. The connection goes far beyond dogma, and it is a movement within all religions and all ages and every culture. Each distinguished panelist mentioned one phrase, “Every child is gifted; every child has a gift.” Thank you, panelists, who speak on behalf of all children. As I asked five years ago in Nurture Your Child’s Gift, “If you truly recognized that our children were our future, how would you treat them today?” I am a champion of children, and I am a champion of the evolving awareness of how to be a better, compassionate, warrior for those who don’t fit the system and those who do. Don’t create separation, create unity. Time for a revolution? Will you join me?
